Match report

A very evenly contested first half; the Cestrians were first to put the ball in the back of the net on 15 minutes, only to have it ruled out by the referee as he judged there to be a foul on the keeper. Chorley took the lead on 30 minutes with an absolute screamer following an under hit clearance and went in at half time 1-0 up.

Straight from the restart the girls and with only 15 seconds on the clock Chester le Street were back on level terms. Great pressure by Lizzy Clarke had the keeper trying to clear the lines, but only as far as Nic Havery, who smashed the ball past the keeper and defenders on the line. The Cestrians were then forced into 2 very quick substitutions, which had them trying to readjust to the play. On 69 mins after a slight mix up and the ball not fully cleared by Chester, Chorley managed to get in behind the back 4, to pull the ball back for a strike, Robyn Parker the Cestrian keeper came off her line to block the shot, but obstructed the attacker. Penalty which was duly dispatched, 2-1Chorley.

The Cestrians needed to dig deep again, and were level again on 72 minutes. An absolute corker of a cross from Lizzy Clarke headed home from 12 yards by Nic Havery, an absolute bullet. A certain contender for goal of the season for the girls so far; great build up play and finish, 2-2. The Cestrians kept mounting attack after attack, with great passing and balls in behind from the captain Anna Collin and Lucy Jackman, constantly asking questions of the back four. The willingness of Jess Ellison and Lizzy Clarke to run in behind the defence was a real problem for them and freed up Laura Hockaday to start moving the ball around. On 80 minutes the trap was sprung – a diagonal pass coming off the defender found Lizzy Clarke wide on the right, first touch in and forward and she smashes it into the top corner, an absolute screamer.  There was a suggestion of offside from the opposition and supporters, however the ref and linesman were adamant that Clarke came from an off to on position before the ball was played (plus the assist from the defender made it all irrelevant). 2-3 Cestrians.

It was all Cestrians up to the end and it could have been a couple more goals to the good – although Chorley hadn’t given up and right at the very death, brave keeping from Robyn Parker smothered a loose ball and it’s all over.

As usual this was a fiercely contested and entertaining game against Chorley, a very good standard, both teams a real credit to the FAWNL.

Team: Robyn Parker, Katie Ellison ( Lucy Jackman 57 mins), Steph Loraine (Amy Kelly 52 mins), Anna Collin (capt), Brogan Prudhoe, Rachel Mellor, Elizabeth Thompson-Clarke, Sarah Burn, Nichole Havery, Laura Hockaday, Jessica Ellison
