Chester le Street Town put in another excellent display to come away from third top Newcastle University with all 3 points in this ENL Div 2 encounter The Cestrians started brightly taking the game to the students with the defence holding their lines well on counter attacks. Matthew Ward opened the scoring after 30 mins when he saw the University keeper off his line to send a shot over him from 25 yards 1-0 This seemed to prompt the hosts into action as they started to push forward Chester le street were dealt a blow in the 38 minute when Luke Collins had to leave the game with a hamstring injury to be replaced by Kiegan Turns and 5 mins later Josh Akal also left the field with a foot injury to be replaced by Jay Nicholson The University were awarded a penalty just prior to half time but Cestrian keeper Jack Wilson was up for it making a brilliant save to his right to enable the visitors to go in 1-0 in the lead
On the resumption Newcastle continued where they had ended the first half pushing forward at every opportunity with Ryan Redford equalising with a well taken shot on 53 mins which gave Wilson no chance. Chester le Street were were being pinned back as the hosts tried to push for a winner but resolute defending saw their efforts come to no avail. Matthew Ward who was foraging up front on his own caught the University defence on 77 mins and worked his way through to fire home a left foot shot to put Chester le Street 2-1 in front – Kevin Dixon joined the game in the 85th minute replacing John Anderson to strengthen the Chester le Street rearguard to hold onto the lead as the University lads continued to search for an equaliser.
