Chester le Street Town turned in a great, battling performance at Northallerton where a stoppage time goal brought them a 1-0 victory and took them into their second appearance in the Ernest Armstrong Cup Final.
Northallerton had the upper hand in the first half without creating many good chances. They could have taken the lead in the 2nd minute when a ball in from the left found Nicholas Martin in space but he fired his shot just over the bar. Chester improved their performance in the second half. After 46 minutes, the ball was played down the right to Alex White. He turned back to cross towards the far post for Kieran Megran to run in but he just failed to make contact with the ball. Northallerton came close to breaking the deadlock after 51 minutes when Chester were nearly caught out by a quick break. A long ball was played through the middle for Martin to chase but Jack Wilson was quickly off the line to gather the ball before Martin could get away a shot. Northallerton looked certain to take the lead after 74 minutes when a ball over from the left found Martin in space but before he could turn the ball into the net, he was stopped by a great tackle from Connor Lyon. Chester found the winner in stoppage time. The ball was played forward for Lee Mole to slip it left to Andrew Clarkson and he raced into the area to fire home.
