Chester le Street Town beat Willington 1-0 in a hard-fought encounter. Willington enjoyed a good start. In the first minute, Connor Lowes was played through but although his shot went just wide of the post the referee awarded a corner. From this corner, Lewis Milner headed just wide of the target. After 4 minutes, Nathan Plews beat the offside trap to fire in a shot which Jack Wilson managed to tip over the bar. After 17 minutes, Damon Ellis crossed from the right and Lowes powered in a header which clipped off the top of the bar. Two minutes later, Lowes made ground down the right and crossed into the middle. The ball was played back to Plews and his shot brought a good save from Wilson. After 35 minutes, Alex White slipped the ball through to Michael Hepplewhite just inside the area but his shot went well wide of the target. Chester le Street made the breakthrough after 38 minutes when White fired in. After 40 minutes, the ball was played through to Andrew Clarkson on the edge of the area but his shot went just wide of the post. Three minutes later, Clarkson broke clear but he fired over bar when he should have done better. After 57 minutes, the ball was crossed over from the left and Lowes flicked a header towards goal but Wilson was alert to turn the ball away for a corner. After 61 minutes, Willington were awarded a free kick just outside the area. Conor Winter fired the free kick over the wall but Wilson made a good save. After 79 minutes, Clarkson went down the left and cut into the area but his low shot across goal was turned for a corner. A good victory in the end. Not a terrific performance and I’m sure Willington would have thought they deserved at least a point
